Andrew Delaney, who was born in Carlingford in 1912, was killed fighting with the International Brigade in Spain.
Andrew was one of nine children of RIC Constable William Delaney, originally from Wicklow. His mother, Elizabeth, was from Cavan.
He emigrated to New York in 1930 where he stayed with his brother, John, in Queens. His occupation is listed as ‘seaman’ and there are records of Andrew having been engaged on two ships, the Emma Alexandria and the Ria, both in 1936.
In February 1938 he arrived in Spain to fight with the Lincoln – Washington Battlion of the Brigade. He was killed in action on the 4th of April that year at Gandesa on the Ebro front.
Andrew’s name is inscribed on a plaque on the commemorative cairn erected in memory of the Irish Brigade Members on the mountainside at Slieve Foye Forest Park.
The plaque was unveiled by his niece, Una, in 2013.
