The castle was built around 1190 by the Norman baron, Hugh de Lacy. It was a vital point of defence for the area for centuries as it not only commanded control of the sea lough but also the narrow gap of land to the north leading into Ulster.
The Castle Tour is available 7 days per week at 2pm.
